Theo Lindqvist's South Bend-based technology startup, Fieldline Robotics, won a multi-year contract this month to supply sensor and navigation systems for autonomous agricultural vehicles, a deal the company estimates could be worth up to $30 million over its full term.

Lindqvist, a former Notre Dame engineering researcher who left academia to found the company seven years ago, built Fieldline Robotics initially around commercial farm equipment navigation software before shifting focus toward fully autonomous systems as major agricultural equipment manufacturers expanded their investment in driverless tractors and combines.

"I spent years researching robotics in a university lab, and I kept thinking about how much of that work was going to stay locked in academic papers if somebody didn't turn it into an actual product," Lindqvist said. "Starting this company was really about betting on where I thought farm equipment was actually heading."

The contract will fund expansion of Fieldline Robotics's South Bend engineering team, with Lindqvist saying the company plans to hire approximately 35 additional engineers over the contract's first two years. The company's proximity to Notre Dame and South Bend's growing technology talent pool has made local recruiting easier than competing firms located farther from a research university.

Fieldline Robotics currently employs 60 people and has previously supplied navigation systems for commercial farm equipment clients. Lindqvist said the new contract represents the company's largest deal to date and will likely shift the balance of its business toward fully autonomous systems going forward.
