DePauw University Adjusts Tuition Model to Reverse Enrollment Slide

DePauw University, the small liberal arts school in Greencastle, is overhauling its pricing model this year, cutting its published tuition rate significantly while restructuring institutional financial aid, a move administrators hope will reverse several years of declining enrollment.

Like many small private colleges nationally, DePauw has faced a shrinking pool of traditional college-age students in the region and growing skepticism among families about the value of a four-year liberal arts degree relative to its sticker price. College officials said the pricing change is meant to make the school's actual cost more transparent rather than requiring families to negotiate financial aid packages to reach an affordable price.

"Too many families were ruling us out before they even applied because they saw the published price and assumed it wasn't realistic for them," said DePauw's vice president for enrollment management. "We wanted a number on the website that actually reflects what most students will pay."

The university is also expanding partnerships with several Indiana community colleges to create clearer transfer pathways, part of a broader strategy to grow its pool of prospective students beyond the traditional out-of-state recruiting pipeline it has relied on historically.

DePauw's enrollment has declined over the past several years, according to university data, a trend administrators say is consistent with regional and national patterns among small private liberal arts colleges. University leadership said early application data for the coming fall suggests the new pricing model has generated a noticeable increase in inquiries from Indiana families.
