The University of Notre Dame is rolling out a significant revision to its computer science curriculum, adding required coursework in cybersecurity and applied cryptography for all majors regardless of their chosen specialization, following years of employer feedback that graduates needed stronger security fundamentals.

University officials said the changes respond directly to how software engineering has evolved, with employers increasingly expecting entry-level developers to understand secure coding practices rather than treating cybersecurity as a specialized elective. Beginning with next year's incoming class, all computer science majors will take at least two new courses in applied security before graduation.

"Students graduating from here today are going to spend their careers writing code that has to survive real attacks, and we'd be doing them a disservice if we kept treating security as an afterthought," said a senior professor in Notre Dame's computer science and engineering department. "This isn't optional anymore for any serious computing curriculum."

The university is also expanding its cybersecurity research lab, adding new infrastructure for students to practice penetration testing and secure system design in a controlled environment, funded in part through a partnership with a regional financial services firm. University leadership said roughly 40 additional lab stations will be available to students by the coming academic year.

The curriculum changes come as universities across the country face pressure to modernize technical training while preserving core computer science fundamentals. Notre Dame officials said the school will continue requiring all majors to complete core algorithms, systems, and theory coursework, describing the new security requirements as additive rather than a replacement for the department's traditional foundation.
