West Lafayette Beauty Retailers Cater to Budget-Conscious Student Skincare Demand
Beauty retailers near Purdue University's West Lafayette campus are expanding affordable skincare offerings to meet growing student demand.
Beauty retailers near Purdue University's West Lafayette campus are expanding affordable skincare product offerings to meet growing demand from college students, many of whom have developed detailed skincare routines influenced heavily by social media content but operate on tight budgets.
Store owners near campus said student shoppers frequently arrive with specific product requests learned from online content, often seeking multi-step routines popularized by social media skincare influencers, but with clear price constraints that differ significantly from the marketing budgets assumed by many premium skincare brands.
"These students know an enormous amount about ingredients and routines, probably more than most adult shoppers did a decade ago, but they need that knowledge to translate into products they can actually afford on a student budget," said the manager of a beauty retailer near the campus. "We've had to really rework our shelf space to highlight the budget lines that still deliver on the ingredients students are asking about."
Several retailers have expanded sections dedicated to drugstore and mass-market skincare brands that have added more scientifically formulated products in recent years, narrowing the gap between budget and premium options in ways that appeal directly to price-sensitive student shoppers who are nonetheless ingredient-conscious. Store owners said sales of affordable retinol and vitamin C serums have grown particularly strongly among the student customer base.
Retailers said the college-age skincare market has become increasingly sophisticated compared with past generations of student shoppers, requiring stores to stock a more curated selection of effective budget products rather than relying on markup-heavy impulse purchase items near the checkout counter.
