Natural Hair Salons Expand Across Indianapolis as Client Demand Grows
Salons specializing in natural hair care are expanding across Indianapolis neighborhoods, reflecting sustained growth in demand for texture-specific styling expertise.
Salons specializing in natural hair care are expanding across several Indianapolis neighborhoods, reflecting sustained growth in demand for stylists trained specifically in textured hair care, a specialty that salon owners say remains underserved relative to demand in many parts of the city.
Several established natural hair salons have opened second locations over the past year, while newer salons focused exclusively on curl-specific cutting techniques and protective styling have opened in neighborhoods that previously lacked dedicated natural hair care options, requiring clients to travel further for specialized service.
"For a long time, if you wanted a stylist who really understood how to cut and care for natural curl patterns, you had a pretty short list of salons in this whole city," said the owner of a natural hair salon that recently opened a second Indianapolis location. "That's changing, but there's still more demand than there are trained stylists to meet it."
Cosmetology schools in the region have responded by expanding curriculum focused specifically on textured hair techniques, addressing a gap that salon owners say has historically left many newly licensed stylists without adequate training in natural hair care despite serving a city with a large Black population. Several salon owners said they now run in-house training programs for new stylists to supplement gaps in formal cosmetology education.
Salon owners said pricing for natural hair services has also become a point of ongoing discussion within the industry, with some stylists arguing that the additional time and specialized skill required for many natural hair services justifies higher prices than standard styling services, a position that has generated some pushback from clients accustomed to lower price points.
