Indiana Manufacturing Employment Shifts as Automotive Suppliers Retool for EVs

Indiana's automotive supplier base is retooling significantly for electric vehicle components, according to state labor department figures, reshaping manufacturing employment patterns across the state's northern counties, where automotive parts manufacturing has long been a dominant employer.

Elkhart and St. Joseph counties, home to a large concentration of automotive and recreational vehicle parts suppliers, have seen some plants retool production lines for battery components and electric drivetrain parts, while other facilities focused on traditional internal combustion components have faced slower demand and, in some cases, workforce reductions.

"Indiana's automotive supply chain has always adapted to whatever Detroit and the broader industry needed, and this transition is just the latest version of that, though it's a bigger shift than what we've seen before," said a state labor economist who tracks manufacturing employment trends. "Some of our suppliers are ahead of this transition and hiring, and some are behind it and struggling."

State officials said they are monitoring the situation closely, noting that the employment picture varies significantly by county and by which specific automotive segment a given supplier serves. Economic development officials said the state has been working to attract battery and EV component manufacturers directly, pointing to several recent large manufacturing announcements in the state as evidence of progress, though they acknowledged the transition will likely continue creating winners and losers among existing suppliers for several more years.

Labor officials cautioned against reading too much into short-term county-level data, noting that Indiana's overall manufacturing employment has remained relatively stable even as the composition of that employment shifts. State economic development officials said they expect the retooling trend to continue as automakers accelerate electric vehicle production timelines.
