Beacon Health System Opens Multilingual Health Clinic Serving South Bend Immigrant Communities

Beacon Health System has opened a new community health clinic in South Bend specifically designed to serve the area's growing immigrant population, offering primary care services in Spanish, Burmese, and several other languages spoken widely in the surrounding neighborhoods.

The clinic employs medical interpreters on staff rather than relying solely on phone-based interpretation services, a model hospital officials said improves both patient comfort and clinical accuracy during appointments covering sensitive health topics. St. Joseph County's immigrant population has grown substantially over the past decade, with South Bend becoming an increasingly diverse city.

"When a patient has to describe their symptoms through a phone interpreter they've never spoken with before, important details get lost, and patients are less likely to bring up things they're embarrassed or worried about," said the clinic's medical director. "Having interpreters who work here every day and build relationships with patients changes what people are willing to tell us."

The clinic also offers sliding-scale fees for uninsured patients and provides on-site assistance helping eligible patients enroll in Medicaid or other coverage programs, addressing a significant barrier to care access among the neighborhood's immigrant residents, many of whom lack employer-sponsored insurance.

Beacon Health System said the clinic is seeing several hundred patients per month since opening and plans to add additional language capacity and expand hours if demand continues to outpace current appointment availability.
