Community Hospital East Completes Emergency Department Renovation to Cut Wait Times
Community Health Network's Community Hospital East in Indianapolis completed a renovation of its emergency department aimed at reducing patient wait times and boarding.
Community Hospital East, part of the Community Health Network system on the east side of Indianapolis, has completed a two-year renovation of its emergency department, adding 12 new treatment bays and a redesigned triage process aimed at reducing patient wait times that had grown significantly in recent years.
The renovated department includes a new rapid-assessment area designed to evaluate lower-acuity patients more quickly, separating them from the flow of more serious trauma and cardiac cases that require the department's larger resuscitation bays. Hospital officials said the redesign was based on patient flow data collected over several years showing where bottlenecks were forming.
"Patients were sometimes waiting hours just to be seen for things that didn't need our most intensive resources, while our most acute cases needed a completely different kind of space," said the emergency department's medical director. "Separating those two patient flows physically, not just on paper, has made a real difference already."
The $30 million renovation also added a dedicated behavioral health evaluation area within the emergency department, responding to a sharp increase in psychiatric emergency visits the hospital has documented over the past several years. The new space includes rooms designed specifically for safety during mental health crises, separate from the general emergency department floor.
Community Health Network said early data since the renovation's completion shows average emergency department wait times have dropped substantially, though hospital officials cautioned that the full impact will become clearer after a full year of data collection.
