Bloomington Yoga Studios Partner With Therapists on Trauma-Informed Movement Classes
Several yoga studios in Bloomington are partnering with licensed therapists to offer trauma-informed movement classes for clients managing anxiety and PTSD.
Several yoga studios in Bloomington have begun partnering with licensed therapists to offer trauma-informed movement classes specifically designed for clients managing anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions, a specialized format that instructors say requires different training than typical yoga instruction.
The classes are structured to give participants more control over their physical experience than a standard yoga class, including options to keep eyes open throughout the session and avoiding physical adjustments from instructors without explicit prior consent, practices designed specifically to avoid triggering trauma responses that more traditional yoga instruction sometimes inadvertently causes.
"A lot of standard yoga cues, like being told to close your eyes or having an instructor physically adjust your pose without warning, can actually be really destabilizing for someone with a trauma history," said a Bloomington yoga instructor who completed specialized trauma-informed certification training. "This format is built from the ground up around giving people choice and control."
The studios have partnered with local licensed therapists who help develop class curricula and, in some cases, co-teach sessions alongside certified yoga instructors, an arrangement studio owners say provides an added layer of safety for participants working through significant mental health challenges. Several participating therapists said they now regularly refer clients to the specialized classes as a complement to traditional talk therapy.
Demand for the classes has grown enough that studios have added additional weekly sessions, with some maintaining waitlists during peak enrollment periods. Instructors said they screen new participants during an initial consultation to ensure the format is appropriate for their specific needs before enrolling them in a full class series.
